MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
by Patti Carpenter
Don’t call
her Sister Mary – unless you’re one of her 5 siblings.
And yes, she was raised Catholic and practiced that religion
until she was about 18 years old. You can just call her
Mary (or if you want to be more formal – Mary Carter).
She’s been around the YESS group since 1996, held
many positions, and brings a bundle of talents to our group.
The newer members amongst us know her as an enthusiastic, organized,
energizer-bunny who plans our wonderful events with apparent
ease (including our upcoming summer fling on August 9th).
She also tirelessly works preparing, printing, and distributing
our monthly newsletter.
Our more seasoned members know that in the past, not only did she organize
a YESS group talent show, she also helped plan several dances
that raised money to help build the Mile Hi Community Center,
as well as served as our group’s
Vice President.
Mary has had plenty of experience using her organizational
skills. For many years she was an administrative assistant,
later becoming a school teacher. After leaving teaching, she
found her way to her current position working for a company
that provides in-home care for seniors.
Her enthusiasm for helping others spills over into all areas – including
all that she does for the YESS group on a daily basis.
Interests? She’s got interests! (besides us, I mean). Mary loves to
travel and since she’s of German descent (with cousins still in Bavaria),
she really loved her trip to Europe (bet she can’t wait to go back).
She also enjoys reading (current events, politics and those can’t-put-the-book-down
murder mysteries).
She’s really enjoyed her time with the YESS group and some of her favorite
memories are early ones when there was something on her calendar
five nights a week. As our Events coordinator, I think she’s doing a
great job of trying to get to that level. She says
the people were so great and friendly, she felt really welcome
when she first joined – like having instant friends. She does a great
job of returning that "you're welcome here" feeling to all
who meet her.
I think we all agree,
there’s just something about Mary………….
And it’s all good. |
